This topic page groups together the resources we hold on drug misuse, under the headings shown below. Click on a heading to go directly down to the right place on this page.
It is estimated that Class A drug use generates 15.4 billion pounds in crime and health costs each year (Home Office, Drug Strategy 2008-2018)
88% of all costs generated by problematic drug use are accounted for by drug-related crime (Home Office 2005, Delivering the Difference)
The 2008-2018 drug strategy comprises four strands:
- protecting communities through tackling drug supply, drug-related crime and anti-social behaviour
- preventing harm to children, young people and families affected by drug misuse
- delivering new approaches to drug treatment and social re-integration
- public information campaigns, communications and community engagement.
During 2008-2009, 16,729 individuals were receiving treatment for drug misuse and 11,041 for alcohol misuse in the East of England.
There are around 130 drug treatment agencies within the East of England who submit data on their clients to NDTMS, which is then used to analyse drug and alcohol treatment in the region.

| | MUSE have produced a set of ‘Adult Drug’ and ‘Young People Substance Misuse’ profiles which outline key information about substance misuse by Drug and Alcohol Action Team (DAAT) in the East of England in 2009. The profiles have been designed to tackle health inequalities by providing local comparative data for DAATs. The primary source of data for the profiles is the 2008/09 Eastern NDTMS (National Drug Treatment Monitoring System) however other data sources have been used. The profiles and a ‘Guidance and Metadata’ document can be found by clicking on the link above.

| | INpho 36: Hidden harms: where are the gaps in substance misuse treatment data?
MUSE have recently published an INpho which examines the data items collected via the National Drug Treatment Monitoring System (NDTMS) in the East of England that are known to be less well reported. The aim is to establish what conclusions, if any, can be drawn about how well the treatment system in the East of England monitors and minimises the harms associated with substance misuse. |
