Drug misuse declared: findings from the 2009/10 British Crime Survey This annual statistical bulletin examines the extent and trends in illicit drug use among a nationally representative sample of 16 to 59 year olds (including a breakdown for young people aged 16 to 24) resident in households in England and Wales. The bulletin is based on results from the 2009/10 British Crime Survey (BCS); including comparisons with 2008/09 and trends since 1996.
This bulletin updates previously published findings on the characteristics and lifestyle factors associated with adults who have taken any illicit drugs, as well as presenting trends in drug
use by key demographic factors since 1996. Updates of the extent and trends in polydrug use are also published here, as are preliminary findings from new BCS measures of drug use.

The Coalition: our programme for government - potential implications for physical activity The Coalition: Our Programme for Government document was published in May 2010, and provides an overview of the key policies that the new Coalition Government will take forward. The programme is set around inspirations of Freedom, Fairness and Responsibility and aim to deliver a radical, reforming government that will develop a stronger society, a smaller state and power and responsibility in the hand of every citizen, thereby creating a Big Society matched by big Citizens.
In understanding the Coalition Government programmes, partners need to be mindful of the potential implication for existing Sport and Physical Activity programmes, for which the Government may wish to steer in another direction or may not be their priority.
This document was prepared by the West Midlands and shared with the regions to look at possible impacts on physical activity agendas and links to current work programmes of The Coalition Programme.

UN World Drug Report 2010 In 2009, the United Nations Member States decided to make further and decisive progress, within a decade, in controlling illicit drug supply and demand. Many illicit drug markets have reached global dimensions and require control strategies on a comparable scale. In that context, there is a need to better understand these transnational markets and the manner in which they operate. This year's World Drug Report is a contribution towards that objective. It opens with an analytical discussion of three key transnational drug markets: the markets for heroin, cocaine and amphetamine-type stimulants. The market discussion is followed by a presentation of statistical trends for all major drug categories. The latest information on drug production, seizures and consumption is presented. Finally, there is a discussion on the relationship between drug trafficking.

Community Games Toolkit A toolkit developed by the West Midlands that could be adopted in the East of England to develop 2012 related activity across this year and next year.
The West Midlands region has developed a toolkit to help organisations develop a Community Games, which aims to bring communities together, giving them the confidence and skills to organise activities, leaving a legacy far beyond the end of 2012.
Community Games provide a great opportunity to bring your community together to take part in sporting and cultural activities inspired by, and in celebration of, the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. By providing opportunities for people of all ages and abilities to try something new, teach others or show to the rest of their communities their talents, Community Games will provide people the opportunity to have their own Olympic or Paralympic moment.
Supported by the Legacy Trust UK and part of the West Midlands Culture Programme for London 2012, the Community Games programme offers lots of information to help get programmes started through a toolkit, which can be downloaded from the link below.

Young people’s drug and alcohol treatment at the crossroads Young people’s specialist drug and alcohol treatment is ‘at a crossroads’. There are different directions it could take, particularly at a time of political change, high octane public debate and tight public finances. Against this background, DrugScope embarked on a consultation process in 2009 with people working in young people’s treatment.

Walking and cycling to school - what is the biggest perceived risk of walking to school? Last updated: 25 May 2010 A survey carried out by national charities Parentline Plus and Living Streets as part of national Walk to School Week has found that parents disproportionately fear their children being abducted or killed in a road accident over the more likely threat to their health from childhood obesity. Although there is about a one in a million chance of a child being killed by a stranger, the risk of severe health issues and early mortality as a result of the lack of physical activity is considerably greater at one in three.
Parentline Plus and Living Streets are calling for a greater understanding of a child’s health needs as almost half of parents surveyed underestimated how much physical activity their child needed to maintain a healthy lifestyle. The Government recommends that children should have seven hours of physical activity per week, but in fact 68% of boys and 76% of girls are not currently meeting this recommendation.
The attached zip file includes a number of documents:
* 18 May 2010 press release - Parents fear unlikely abduction over the more likely health threat of inactive lifestyles.
* Supporting briefing paper - Is it safe to let our children walk to school?
* Previously published document 'Backseat Children-how our car dependent culture compromises safety on our streets' which calls on parents and primary school children to take part in Walk to School week and other walking initiatives.
* The document 'Unfit for Purpose: How Car Use Fuels Climate Change and Obesity' assesses the contribution of growth in car travel to the decline in human energy expenditure and consequently to the parallel growth in obesity in the UK; and at the same time calculates the contribution to climate change through carbon dioxide emissions as car travel has replaced walking. Through this exploration the study has sought to demonstrate that two of the main challenges facing the UK in health and environment have common origins and some common solutions.

Active Celebration: using the London 2012 Games to Get the Nation Moving This evidence-based set of case studies and strategies provides the blueprint for how between now and July 2012 we can capture people’s imagination and inspire them to get involved. It has been commissioned jointly by the Physical Activity Coordinators in the Department of Health offices across England, and developed by the Centre for Sport, Physical Education & Activity Research (SPEAR) at Canterbury Christ Church University.
Active Celebration answers several questions:
• How can the Games inspire us to be more active?
• How can we give most support to those with most to gain i.e. the least active?
• What will work best and who needs to be involved?
For commissioners, it offers an evidence-based guide to which schemes are likely to work in which settings, and what outcomes you can expect.
For coordinators, it provides a detailed picture of the possibilities for legacy work so you can see which ones match most closely with your local priorities.
For delivery partners, it’s a practical ‘how to’ guide covering design and implementation, with a host of useful contacts.
For anyone who has a responsibility for legacy work at local, regional or national level, and wherever you are in the country, Active Celebration will stimulate discussion, aid decision making, generate ideas and positively challenge partnerships at all levels to maximise the opportunities before us.

Statistics from the National Alcohol Treatment Monitoring System (NATMS) 1st April 2008 - 31st March 2009 NDTMS was introduced on 1 April 2001; however, formal collection of structured alcohol treatment data was not incorporated into NDTMS until 1st April 2008. From this date, the Department of Health commissioned the National Treatment Agency (NTA) to collect and analyse alcohol treatment data on its behalf. This subset of the NDTMS Data Set consists of 28 data items and is known as the National Alcohol Treatment Monitoring System (NATMS) Data Set. NATMS forms a key part of The Department’s Alcohol Improvement Programme and contributes, in part, to the delivery of the Government’s PSA Delivery Agreement 25 (see http://www.hm-treasury.gov.uk/d/pbr_csr07_psa25.pdf).
