Sustainable Development metrics project - Travel carbon intensity by distance categorySustainability improves health and wellbeing and carbon reduction is an important part of sustainability now and in the future. The Climate Change Act set the scale of change required as a 34% reduction in carbon emissions by 2020, from a 1990 baseline. Evidence in the Carbon Reduction strategy suggests that the NHS would need to achieve a 10% reduction in emissions by 2015 to support this target, with a more recent baseline of 2007.Travel emissions account for 16% of the carbon footprint for NHS England. To convert travel mileage information into a carbon footprint the carbon intensity of travel can be used for each distance. As different travel modes are used at different distances the carbon intensity varies based on distance. This table provides an estimate of the carbon intensity for each distance category based on a standard mix of travel modes for that distance.
