Variation in healthcare activity between populations is ubiquitous and reduction of unacceptable variation is an objective of the NHS. Variation can have many causes: -it may be due to chance; differences in underlying healthcare need; differences in supply or demand; differences in clinical practice; or differences in coding. This page examines how hospital inpatient activity varies across the East of England.

Variation in HRG rates between local authority populations

The source data for this analysis can be downloaded below. For each HRG v3.5 we have calculated the national average rate and directly age standardised rates (to the Engalnd popuulation) for each local authority district of residence in the East of England.

Measuring healthcare variation

There are a number of ways of measuring variation in activity rates. We have used the Gini coefficient as a summary measure of variation.
