Populations

Lead analyst: Doris Hain

The number of people and their age are the most important determinants of health need and utilisation. It is important to understand the size and age distribution of the population in determining current service delivery and to understand population change for planning future services.

This collection holds population estimates and projections at various geographical levels - region, LA, PCT and small area.

On 27th August the Office for National Statistics (ONS) released their 2008 population estimates for the UK by country, SHA and LA. New estimates indicate that the population of the UK was 61,383,200 in mid-2008, up by 408,000 (0.7 per cent) on the previous year and over two million more than in mid-2001. For the first time in nearly a decade, natural change (the difference between births and deaths) has overtaken net migration (the difference between long-term migration into and out of the UK) as the main contributor to population growth over a 12 month period. The UK population continues to age, with over 2% of the population aged 85+. There are around 5.7 million people living in the East of England (2008 midyear population estimate).
