Role of Government Office in JSNA: "PCTs are working with their partners on joint strategic needs assessments. The JSNAs will underpin PCT commissioning identifying local targets for action. We can anticipate seeing local targets to address obesity, smoking, health inequalities and support for vulnerable adults including older people and those with mental health problems. The commissioning framework needs to confirm the need for annual joint strategic needs assessments and joint commissioning arrangements, with PCTs delivering their LAA responsibilities." For more details, please contact Catherine Gregson.

APHO JSNA project
APHO hasbeen commissioned, by the Department of Health, to undertake an appraisal of the current minimum dataset outlined on tables 1 and 2 of Annex A in Commissioning Framework for Health and Well-Being. A copy of the steering groupproject proposalhas just been added to this page. Further details will appear on this webpage as and when they are released.

Note on Top Ten Diagnoses
The top ten diagnoses is given for each county and Unitary Authority in the East of England as well as the overall figures for theEast of England. They are based on the main diagnosis at the finished episodes (the episode with a discharge in). The data is based on all finished episodes for the period 2001/02 to 2005/06 excluding regular day and night admissions. The top ten diagnoses are presented in two different ways:
- Top ten diagnoses by number of discharges: this gives the ten most common diagnoses by ageband and sex.
- Top ten diagnoses by length of stay where the length of stay is less than 30 days by ageband and sex: this gives the top ten diagnoses by the total number of bed days excluding those finished episodes where the length of stay is 30 days or more. As the data has been truncated in this way, the overall toptendiagnoses by length of stay will be slightly different, particularly in the older ages, where it is more common for people to stay in hospital for 30 days or more.
