Health geography is particularly confusing for several reasons. The structure of health organisations has been subject to frequent change and consequently there have been several boundary changes. Another confounding factor is the fact that health geography and administrative/governmental geography rarely are completely compatible. This means that it can be very hard to get comparable health data over any period of time. This page aims to clarify the current situation with regard to the (health) geography of the East of England region and to point toward useful geographical information resources.

Key messages / basic information
The East of England PHO region is the same as the Government Office Region and covers the counties of Norfolk, Suffolk, Cambridgeshire, Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire and Essex and also includes the Unitary Authorities of Peterborough, Luton, Thurrock and Southend-on-Sea.
This region covers 44 Local Authorities and 4 Unitary Authorities (within the 6 Counties).
From 1 July 2006 the currently 3 SHAs will be merged into one SHA, covering the whole region and it is proposed that the number of PCOs will reduce from 41 to 14 as from 1 October 2006. For more details please view: Proposed East of England PCTs
It is envisaged that joint working between health and local government will be encouraged by sharing this regional boundary between the East of England SHA and the Regional Government Office.
