ONS has published 2006-based subnational population projections on 12th June to cover the period 2006 to 2031. These replace previous subnational projections and are consistent with the 2006-based national projections. Further details and data can be found below in the "Population Projections" section, or to go straight to the ONS website click here.
ONS East of England highlight three key projected outcomes for the region for the ten year period 2006-2016:
- the East is projected to be the second fastest growing English region, increasing in population size by 10 per cent, by 0.6 million from 5.6 to 6.2 million over the ten years 2006-2016
- Colchester is projected to have a large rise in population (21 per cent increase, 171 to 208 thousand over the ten years 2006-2016)
- North Norfolk is projected to have a high proportion of elderly people (32 per cent of the population over 65 in 2016 - an increase over previous projections) and reflects the national picture of an ageing population for the period

These projections are consistent with the revised mid-2004 population estimates published on 22 August 2007 and the 2004-based national population projections published by the Government Actuary's Department on 20 October 2005.
The projections are available on our website by age and sex for Government Office Regions, counties, local authorities and for Strategic Health Authority areas as defined between 9 February 2004 and 30 June 2006. Results for Strategic Health Authorities as defined at October 2006 and other areas composed of whole local authority districts are available on request from the SNPP team. 2003 based long term subnational population projections were published on 25 November 2004. They project forward the mid 2003 population estimates to give an indication of future trends in population by age and sex for the next 25 years from 2004 to 2028.
The projections are fully consistent with the 2003 mid year population estimates published on 9 September 2004 and with the revised back series of mid year population estimates published on 7 October. They are constrained at a national level by the 2003 National Population Projections published by the Government Actuary's Department on 30 September 2004.
They are available on the ONS website for population in quinary age groups for Government Office Regions, strategic health authority areas, counties (metropolitan and non metropolitan), county districts, unitary authorities and London boroughs. | | |
