On 21st August ONS released their 2007 population estimates for the UK by country, SHA and LA.  New estimates indicate that the population of the UK was 60,975,000 in mid-2007, up by 388,000 (0.6 per cent) on the previous year and nearly two million more than in mid-2001.  For the first time ever, there are more people of state pensionable age than under-16s.  The oldest age group (80 and over) is the fastest growing. 

In the East of England, Forest Health and Colchester, are two of the six LAs in England and Wales which have seen an increase of 12% or more in their population since 2001.  Cambridge, which had the highest volume of population movement from 2001 to 2007, also had relatively high population growth (9%).
