 | Drug Misuse Lead person: Paul Brand |
- It is estimated that Class A drug use generates 15.4 billion pounds in crime and health costs each year (Home Office, Drug Strategy 2008-2018)
- 88% of all costs generated by problematic drug use are accounted for by drug-related crime (Home Office 2005, Delivering the Difference)
- The 2008-2018 drug strategy comprises four strands:
- protecting communities through tackling drug supply, drug-related crime and anti-social behaviour
- preventing harm to children, young people and families affected by drug misuse
- delivering new approaches to drug treatment and social re-integration
- public information campaigns, communications and community engagement.
- During 2007–2008, 15,124 adults were in treatment in the Region for drug misuse, of whom 14,740 were resident within the East of England.
- 977 young people aged under 18 years had contact with a treatment agency in the East of England for drug misuse during 2007-2008.
- There are around 130 drug treatment agencies within the East of England who submit data on their clients to NDTMS, which is then used to analyse drug treatment in the region.
