What is HES?
Hospital Episode Statistics (HES) provides information on admitted patient care (inpatients and day cases)
delivered by NHS hospitals in England from 1989. The HES database is a record-level database populated by a
subset of the data submitted by NHS Trusts to the NHS-wide Clearing Service. Nationally there are approximately
12 million admitted patient records for each financial year.
Public Health Observatories were established as regional safe havens for HES following Shifting the Balance of Power. Erpho’s HES service was established early in 2002.
Erpho has access to a Safe Haven extract of regional data and to national data via the HES online system. The regional extract consists of data relating to patients resident or treated in the East of England, or registered with GPs in the region. Other organisations in the East of England that have access to HES online include Strategic Health Authorities and the regional public health group.
HES is not a live system and there is a time lag (usually 9-12 months) between the end of the financial year and the availability of data through HES online or as part of the Safe Haven extract.
What is HES used for?
Data from HES has been used to support the following:
- Health needs assessment
- Health equity audit
- National Service Frameworks
- Cancer networks
- Performance monitoring
- Profiling of small areas

Recent developments
From December 2007, we have access to national level data for the full year 2006/7 plus outpatient data from 2003/04 to 2006/07. We are currently testing A&E data plus some new national datasets of spell-based data and multiyear time series data, and we will shortly be receiving HES data linked to ONS mortality data.
National work
Erpho works on the further development of HES analysis with other members of the Association of Public Health Observatories. For more information please follow the link.
We have developed a set of standard outputs (tables and graphs) from HES. These cover key disease and policy areas such as
National Service Frameworks. This set will expand with time.
