Dr Julian Flowers, Acting Director

My role is to oversee the technical and scientific development of the Observatory. This includes the development of the website, public health analysis, and production of paper products, and developing erpho's role in the promotion of rigorous quantitative and qualitative public health methods in practice.
I have worked in public health within the region for nearly 10 years, and prior to this trained in general medicine. My general interests include clinical epidemiology, healthcare and acute sector planning, chaos and complexity.

Business management

My role, as Acting Business Manager, is to provide business management leadership to the Observatory for all business functions including financial planning and monitoring, human resources and staff development, contract handling, evaluation of organisational performance, organisational development and operational management. This includes ensuring that appropriate financial and clinical governance measures are in place and that appropriate human resource policies and procedures are implemented.

With other senior members of staff I support the Director in the development, implementation and delivery of erpho’s annual delivery plan and work programme. I am Line Manager to the Business Management Functional Team members, who include the PA/ Office Coordinator, PA / Finance Officer and the Team Coordinator.

James Harrison, Team Coordinator

My role as Team Coordinator is to provide a link between the functional teams.
For the Business Management team my role encompasses: event co-ordination, management and administration; meeting preparation and minute taking; various administration tasks; and any ad-hoc project required.
As part of the Communications team I am responsible for the co-production, and distribution, of health intelligence east (HIE). HIE is an important tool as it is a concise description the region's activity and key issues affecting the workforce. I act as the contact individual for both publication requests and dissemination of any new erpho product.
Alongside the IM&T team, I assist with the erpho website. I submit new resources, register new users and act as a first line of contact for any registration problems. My work with the IM&T team has developed to include some web authoring and web administration.

Jane Donaghy, Office Coordinator

My role as Office Coordinator is to assist the Acting Business Manager with the operational management of the Observatory. Specific projects include implementing and reviewing operational policies and procedures, ensuring compliance with and implementation of Cambridgeshire PCT operational policies and procedures, managing all temporary support staff and deputizing for the Acting Business Manager as required.

Eve Allsopp, PA / Finance Officer

My role is to provide a PA service to the Director, together with Financial and Administration Support as part of the erpho team. An important aspect of the job is communication. I am the first point of contact with the outside world and it is essential to take clear messages, be diplomatic, friendly and build up a rapport with people I deal with on the telephone and within the team. All purchases have to be requisitioned by me as one of the authorised signatories and I am responsible for the payment of utilities bills. The job also involves organising meetings, diary keeping, minute taking and Health and Safety implementation.

Communications

Dr Claire O'Brien, Communications Manager

My role is to lead on the publications and other communications outputs of the Observatory. These products must embody the qualities we want to promote, such as high standards of accuracy and consistency, and relevance, in association with an instantly recognisable brand.
We publish several series of authoritative and highly popular paper products, such as health intelligence east (monthly newsletter), INpho, Health Inequalities Profiles and Briefings, all of which are also available electronically.
I contribute to promotional aspects of our other products and services such as the website, conferences and our presence within the Institute of Public Health. I monitor and respond to feedback from our target audience on how we can improve our communications to suit their needs, and I liaise with the other regional PHOs via the Business and Communications Forum.

Peter Cornelissen, Head of Information Management & Technology

My main role is to lead the design and development of systems through the use and understanding of existing and emerging technologies, and to progress collaboration with other PHO teams and external strategic partnerships. I am also responsible for the management of software developments by external contractors.
Joining in January 2002, this is my first position in the NHS, previously working for Microsoft (for two and a half years) and other IT companies for more than 20 years.
My interests include innovative web design and development, software engineering practice and processes, software tools, databases and computing in general. I hope to have an impact on the way the team, and the Observatory as a whole, work and to enable them to perform their tasks more easily.

Doris Hain, Information Specialist (Web Site)

My role as part of 'Information Management and Technology': Web design, development, and maintenance; monitoring and analysis of website usage; coordinating contributions from colleagues. I am a member of the cross-PHO design team working on the common new version of PHORMS.
My role as part of 'Data and Information': Extraction, analysis and processing of public health data, with a focus on presentation and developing user friendly tools to make the data better accessible.

Karen Bellamy, IT Network and Security Manager

My role is to provide a IT Service to erpho, primarily as Network System Administrator, I ensure a smooth running of the network together with all of its associated hardware and software components; this may include upgrades to the current infrastructure and any configuration changes, providing IT Help Desk support to all staff in all their hardware and software problems; advising staff and training them appropriately in using the network effectively and general good practices in IT and Security.
I am required to maintain inventories for hardware, software, licences, etc.; ensuring records are up to date for audit review at any time. I purchase all IT associated equipment; process plans and implement upgrades and replacements of hardware when required ensuring all budget expenditure records correlate to the financial inventory that I also manage.
I also have responsibility for Erpho's IT security compliance, responsible for the day-to-day security of the unit in protecting NHS assets and staff through devising effective policies/compliance forms based on my annual security risk assessment review and the NHS toolkit.
I have worked within the NHS since 1990 and currently work part time (3 days) to balance home/work life with my young family.

My role is to provide information and analysis of data from databases and on-line sources.
Being a generalist, I work with others in the Data Team on a variety of projects within the work program (Health Profiles, Inequality Profiles, Joint Strategic Needs Assessment, Save to Invest etc.), HES requests, and for the CPHIT team. James and I work together to organise the Public Health Information Analysts Forum which takes place quarterly around the region. The Summer School is also something I enjoy being involved with.
Within Erpho, I lead on the Crime and Prisons topics.
Previously, I worked at the SHA and WDC as an Information Analyst. I have a background in teaching, biology and computing

I have recently completed an M.Sc. in Demography and Health, and I currently lead on the topics of Adult Obesity and Populations.

Sarah Blundell, Information Analyst (HES)

My role in ERPHO is to act as a resource for public health related data analysis, interpretation and presentation. In particular, I am employed to provide a service responding to requests for information from Hospital Episodes Statistics (HES).

I previously worked as a Mental Health Information Analyst for Hampshire Partnership Trust and I am the ERPHO lead for Mental Health.

Aphrodite Niggebrugge, Information Specialist (GIS)

Within erpho I am responsible for the day to day running of the Geographical Information System (GIS). This includes responding to mapping requests, maintenance of the systems (MapInfo and Arc Editor) and arranging the training of staff (when required). At a regional level I promote and enable the use of GIS by the running of a public health GIS network and by responding to GIS and mapping related queries. As a member of the Association for Geographic Information and specifically their Health Special Interest Group I regularly attend national meetings and keep in touch with other GI specialists in the health arena.

Child health team

Dr Sian Evans, Associate Public Health Specialist

My role within erpho is centred around information to promote the health of children, young people and families.
I have worked in public health since 1993 training first in Lanarkshire in the West of Scotland and then at the Nuffield Institute for Health in Leeds. General interests include: injury prevention and health inequalities.

Dr Sue Halliday, Consultant in Public Health Medicine

I am a Public Health consultant and have worked in the NHS in the East of England for the last 20 years. My main field of expertise is in child (including adolescent) and maternal public health. I have a particular interest in screening and links with the antenatal and neonatal screening programmes
Working with Dr Sian Evans as part of the Child Public Health Intelligence team in erpho we are developing the available resources and public health intelligence in the area of child public health, and currently working on a series of briefings focussing the Every Child Matters Outcome areas, and on other topical issues in child health. .

Regional Drugs Health Information Unit (RDHIU)

Mrs Irene Cameron, Manager

I am responsible for ensuring that accurate and timely data on treatment for substance misuse is collected and submitted to the National Drug Treatment Monitoring System by all Substance Misuse Treatment Agencies in the Region.
This involves establishing relationships with key stakeholders in the National Treatment Agency regionally and nationally, the Drug and Alcohol Action Teams and the Substance Misuse Treatment Providers. A key challenge for the team is to improve the quality and comprehensiveness of data submissions. This will then allow more meaningful use of the data for public health analysis and performance management.
I have worked in NHS information management for the past eight years, within Health Authorities, Trusts and the NHS Information Authority. These roles have involved key responsibility for information quality assurance, and I hope to bring that experience to bear within the work of the RDHIU.

Mr Paul Tansley, Technical Facilitator/ Liaison Officer

My role involves the provision of technical advice, support and training to drug treatment providers to enable accurate and timely data submissions to the National Drug Treatment Monitoring Service.
I am the key technical link between the ten Drug and Alcohol Action Teams (DAATs), the treatment providers, the regional NTA and the RDHIU, with involves establishing effective working relationships with all key stakeholders.

Mr Paul Brand, Information Analyst

As Information Analyst for the RDHIU team, I am responsible for analysing the NDTMS database and producing reports and information on the substance misuse treatment data for the East of England. Additionally, I am the primary contact for people requesting data for research purposes.

I have a strong research and analysis background. After graduating with a geography degree, I have been an Information Officer at both the Cambridgeshire County Council Research Group and the Cambridgeshire Drug and Alcohol Action Team.

Mrs Louise Welford, Database and Administrative Support Officer

As key administrator for the RDHIU team I am responsible for the efficient management and maintenance of the RDHIU databases in order to secure consistent high quality data.
I am the primary point of contact for drug treatment providers across the region, offering support to agency staff in matters relating to the efficient return of data.
I provide general administrative support to all members of the RDHIU team, and am responsible for the development of the Unit's key operational systems.
